Lexington has been one of the fastest growing towns in South Carolina for years, and it shows. New subdivisions keep going in off Corley Mill Road, Old Chapin Road, and Augusta Highway, while older neighborhoods near Main Street have the mature trees and established yards of a long-settled town.

What Lexington yards need

Lexington County straddles the Fall Line. The northern part of town toward Lake Murray has more Piedmont clay and rolling ground, while the southern side toward Red Bank and beyond gets sandier as you head into the Sandhills. That split affects everything from which grass we recommend to how an irrigation system should be programmed. Centipede is popular on the sandier lots because it tolerates low fertility and acidic soil, while bermuda and zoysia do well on the better soils closer to the lake.

New construction is everywhere in Lexington, and new build lawns have predictable problems. Topsoil is thin or missing, sod was laid on compacted fill, and grading around the house was done quickly. We fix those lawns with real soil prep and new sod, add irrigation so the new lawn has a fighting chance through its first summer, and install downspout drains where water is pooling next to the slab.

Lots near Lake Murray and along South Lake Drive often slope toward the water. Retaining walls and terraced beds keep that soil from washing downhill, and they make room for a flat patio with a view. Paver patios are one of the most requested projects on those properties.

Like the rest of the Midlands, Lexington gets long, dry stretches in summer and heavy storms in hurricane season. A lawn that is watered deep and infrequently, and a yard that drains well, gets through both.

Many of the newer neighborhoods in Lexington have homeowners associations with standards for mowing height, edging, and front-yard landscaping.
