Sod gives you a finished lawn in a day, but only if the ground under it is ready. Most failed sod jobs we see were laid on compacted fill, over old dead turf, or on a grade that sends water toward the house. We handle the prep first so the new grass has something to root into.

How the job works
- 1Measure and choose grass. We measure the area, look at sun and shade, and help you pick bermuda, zoysia, centipede, or St. Augustine.
- 2Strip and grade. Old turf comes out, the soil is loosened, and the grade is set so water drains away from the foundation.
- 3Lay and roll. Sod is laid the day it arrives with staggered seams, then rolled to press roots into the soil.
- 4Water and establish. We water it in and give you a schedule for the first few weeks until the roots take hold.
Choosing and laying sod in the Midlands
Nearly every sod lawn in Columbia is a warm-season grass. Bermuda is the go-to for full sun and heavy use, and it recovers fast from wear and drought. Zoysia is denser, handles some shade, and makes a thick carpet, though it is slower to repair if it gets damaged. Centipede is a low-maintenance option that does well on the sandy, acidic soils common in parts of Richland and Lexington counties. St. Augustine is the choice for shadier yards but needs more water.
Tall fescue sod is available, but in the Midlands it tends to thin out in the heat of July and August. We only recommend it for heavily shaded spots, and we are honest about the upkeep it needs.
Soil matters as much as grass choice. New construction lots around Columbia often have compacted red clay fill under a thin layer of topsoil. Sod laid directly on that stays shallow-rooted and burns out in summer. Sandy lots have the opposite problem and dry out fast. Either way, the prep work is what decides whether the new lawn lasts.
The best time to lay warm-season sod here is late spring through summer, when the grass is actively growing and roots in quickly. Early fall installs also work. Winter installs are possible with dormant bermuda or zoysia, but rooting is slower.
What affects the price
Every property is different, so we quote each job after seeing it. These are the things that move the number most:
- Square footage of the area
- Grass variety, since zoysia and St. Augustine typically cost more than bermuda or centipede
- How much old turf, weeds, or debris has to be removed
- Grading needed, and whether soil needs to be brought in
- Access for equipment and sod pallets
- Whether irrigation is being added at the same time

Timeline and warranty
Most residential sod jobs take one to three days from strip to final roll, depending on size and how much grading is needed. New sod typically roots in two to three weeks in warm weather, and you can mow it once it no longer lifts when tugged.
