What Columbia yards need

Columbia sits on the Fall Line, the line where the sandy coastal plain meets the red clay Piedmont. You can see it in the soil. Parts of Rosewood and neighborhoods toward Fort Jackson sit on loose, sandy ground that drains fast and dries out quickly in summer. Head north or west, toward Broad River Road or up past Two Notch Road, and you start hitting dense red clay that holds water after every storm. Our crews plan irrigation, drainage, and planting around which side of that line your yard sits on.

The older neighborhoods near Devine Street, Rosewood Drive, and Forest Drive have beautiful mature oaks and pines, and all that shade makes it hard to keep turf alive. Bermuda thins out under a canopy, so these yards often do better with zoysia or St. Augustine in the shadier sections, or with more bed space and less lawn. Roots from big trees also compete with grass for water, which is why many of these lawns look fine in May and struggle by August.

Northeast Columbia, along Clemson Road, Hardscrabble Road, and Sparkleberry Lane, is mostly newer construction. The common problems there are thin topsoil over compacted fill, builder-grade sod that never rooted deeply, and grading that sends downspout water toward the foundation. Sod replacement with real soil prep, underground downspout lines, and irrigation are the jobs we do most on that side of town.

Every part of Columbia gets hot, humid summers and heavy afternoon storms, and hurricane season can bring several inches of rain in a day. After Helene in 2024, we cleaned up downed trees across the area, and plenty of homeowners learned where their yards hold water. Lots in Shandon, Rosewood, and Melrose Heights are often small with narrow side yards, tight gates, and brick walkways that need care. For homes in the older neighborhoods, where a lot of the landscaping went in decades ago, a common first project is clearing out overgrown foundation shrubs and replanting with shrubs that will stay the right size.
